At Commonwealth, we love a challenge.
And we were presented with one from Slaughter Hanson
Advertising, in Birmingham, Alabama. One of their clients
needed help in marketing a Christmas book that just
wasn’t moving off the shelf. There wasn’t
much time.
What we came
up with.
Slaughter Hanson needed a package that was visually appealing and
would move people to buy. We came up with a unique design that housed,
both, the hardbound book and the musical instrument (a toy violin)
that the book had been written about. Using color swatches supplied
by the agency, we customized all the materials to meet the exact
color requirements. We then designed a sturdy package that would
not be damaged during shipping.
The concept was approved and it was time to begin manufacturing.
Inside of four weeks, during the busiest of Christmas seasons, we
had the custom papers and board fabricated; screen printed the see-through
lids; made dies; die cut and glued all the materials; assembled the
boxes; inserted the books and violins; packed it all up and shipped
it. Five thousand pieces got where they needed to be on time and
looking great.
How it worked.
It was launched during the hectic Christmas season with a total order
of 5,000. Without any previous orders, the seller was able to move
4,000 units to small bookstores in their limited geographical area.
That seller now has plans to expand to the larger book retailer chains
with estimates of 50,000 units. Mission accomplished. |
